View of Valdez Glacier,Lake and Stream from CMRC Mid-Mountain
One of the hidden gems of the Valdez area is the Valdez Glacier, this was one of the key factors for Valdez's success during the Gold Rush days of the late 1800's and early 1900's. This glacier was the main trail for prospectors and people headed into the Alaskan interior to find wealth in the gold fields, this trail was named the All-American route due to the fact that prospectors did not have to cross Canada into Alaska. Due to Valdez being the northern most ice free port, this was as close as you could get to the interior during the spring months when travel was possible over the glaciers of the Chugach range.
Over the last two decades the glacier has retreated from site on the western side of Valdez Glacier Stream, now the only way to see this magnificent glacier is from the water or the eastern shore line. During the summer months this lake at the glacier base is full of enormous icebergs waiting to be explored, Rydor Enterprises would like to introduce you to this magnificent place!
During the summer and winter months we provide access to incredible views of ice caves and formations floating on the glacier lake, also special customized trips (such as exploration and gold prospecting) up the Valdez Glacier as well as Camicia Glacier. Our professional staff provides safety and area knowledge as you explore and actually touch a glacier.
Summer months our van transports our clients from downtown Valdez to the Valdez Glacier Lake where you will board one of our rafts to experience the glacier from the water. Raft guides shall take you to the edge of the glacier showing you the beauty of the area, as well as informing you of the history, geology, and basic glacial theory.
Winter months consist of more specialized trips, relative to skill levels and weather conditions, from basic snow machine tours, dog sledding, ice climbing and glacial training.
